Despite a 6-megapixel sensor, there's nothing wrong with the D40's picture, which come so close to the quality provided by 10-megapixel SLRs that it could be hard to spot the difference. But while the new control interface looks great, it's rather sluggish and fiddly to use. Also consider:

Good value for moneyReviewer: junifer, Whitehaven, Cumbria Good value for money for first DSLR camera. Easy to use, just getting to grips with it, had it for 3 days! Good for practise, may upgrade at a later date, but I'm satisfied with it for now.
Excellent Beginners choiceReviewer: kevincockrill, Huntingdon, UK When I was ready to buy a DSLR, I looked at the reviews of various cameras and settled on teh Nikon D40. Boy, was that the right choice, its easy to use by a beginner such as myself and I have been very impressed by the quality of the pictures. Have had it about a month now and bought a Sigma 70 - 300 lens to go with it after trying out the 18-55 that came with the body. All I can say is if you are looking for a camera to see if you get on with DSLRs, this is the one to go for.
first dslr d40Reviewer: richardstess, haddigton, united kingdom what a cracking piece of equipment, picture quality brilliant , no problems at all , it does everything i ask of it and more , as for trouble finding lenses for the d40 where are people looking . ive got a tamaron 70-300 on the front of mine and thats where it stays.
my first dslrReviewer: pauldurham, houghton le spring, united kingdom had my d40 since march this year have took it with on holiday and i am amazed at my snaps .as one person mentioned it is hard to find lenses but i have added to mine with a 55/200mm lense.its the perfect beginners camera
For the Money: BargainReviewer: Wiggy, penarth, Walex My first DSLR. Wasn't at first going to delve into DSLR's but it was only £30 more than some of the compact digitals, so took the jump.
I've had it 2 weeks now, it's incredible. Picture quality is awesome.
Don't be fooled by people saying you NEED more than 6mp, you only really need higher than this if you plan on printing on A2.
My only gripe with it is the lack of internal focusing motor, which can make finding a new lens a little more difficult. But it isn't that big a deal.
If you have the money, and want a DSLR that does everything you'd expect it to, the Nikon D40 is the way forward.
THE NIKON D40. ONE OF THE BEST IN THE BUSINESSReviewer: coleturton, Barnet, United Kingdaon I have used SLR cameras for many years. In fact I used to specialized in Black & White Photography. My first digital camera was point and shoot model. After reading all the camera reviews about DSLR cameras I decided to opt for the Nikon D40. I could not have chosen better. This is fantastic entry level camera. Nikon has done it again . A+++++
it is what it isReviewer: dypeterc, Lakewood, OH, USA not sure why some people are giving the d40 such a hard time. this camera is an entry-level dslr. plain and simple. review it for what it is...
it's not going to have more advanced features that u'll find on the higher-end cameras (ie more af points, dof preview, internal drive motor, etc). u want them, go w/ the d80 or 300.
i love this camera. it's small, light, and takes great photos. photos usually don't need any post-processing. color is well saturated and noise is hardly existent at iso 1600. even the kit lens is good.
i'm glad i picked this camera up and wouldn't think twice about it. canon, olympus, and pentax all have direct competitors to the d40 but there's one thing that they don't have - nikon glass.
j.williamsReviewer: photocrazypic, Bognor Regis, UK Great Camera This is my first dslr and i find it easy to use and navergate the menu system. The only downside i have found is that it sometime struggles to focus in low light.
D FOR DYNAMITEReviewer: melevo, BORO, UK in a few words " I LOVE IT!"
