The D40x produces superb colour images, but why is it so expensive compared to the D40? The convoluted controls may be tolerable in the D40, but they're harder to stomach here. The £600 price pitches it against some cameras that either undercut it out-spec it. Also consider:
Great quality pictures, fantastic battery life (I took it on holiday and took over 230 photos (+ rejects) and still had life in the battery on my return, that included the kids daily review of the days photos), controls are reasonably simple to use if you read the instruction book, nice clear LCD screen, light & compact, build quality felt & looked good.
Cons
Lenses, they must be Nikkor Af-s or Sigma HSM or such like, this is limiting although they are now becoming more common, if expensive. Camera body shortcuts for controls like ISO, metering pattern etc. are missing, there is no separate display for these settings it all has to be done through the main LCD Screen, fiddly in a hurry.
I enjoyed the camera but quickly out grew it and sold it to upgrade in December 07. The main reasons for this were the usability was spoiled by the lack of Camera body shortcuts, and the need to buy more expensive lenses was restrictive and frustrating.
Nikon D40x

Bought my Camera 04/06/2oo7 after owning a Nikon D200 for six months and previously at least 6 Cameras through the last 10 years. I finally gave up on the D200 decided it was too complicated for me, the battery didnt last that long and the Camera was too heavy and bulky for a general holiday and events camera. I made the wrong choice a good Camera, but it was not the correct one for me. The D40x produces great images and true colours without any effort or needing to be an expert photographer. I can print up to A4 on my HP 7360 printer producing good clear photographs. It is light and small to carry after the 200 I dont find the controls a problem and the menu is simple to use and understand. I enjoy using the Camera for this amature enthusiast it ticks all the boxes I take good clear photographs with it to my standard and the Battery lasts forever.
