You’ll need to spend some time with your head in the manual, but it’s worth it. This is one of the best budget SLRs on the market. The potential image quality is excellent, and the degree of control you have is stunning. Be warned, though: you will need to put in a lot of post-shoot editing work to produce top images. Also consider:
Nikon D50
You may say I am unconventional because I find the D70S delivering better results than the highly acclaimed D50 & D40/D40x.
How come ? Well, it is all a question of what you expect in terms of quality and taste. Mine could be defined as the Nikon guy who cherish Velvia 50 film. Finding the SLR that match closely those results is very hard but the D70S is one of those capable of doing so.
Why ? Because it has those extra advanced settings and flexibility that can make it happen. More important, you can use your beloved Nikkor AF pro lens that you would not easily trade with new generation lens and not only because of cost.
If you are for this exclusive Nikkon feel and results with the quality and color of the Velvia 50, then the D70S is wonderful.
If you want to immediately shoot the right picture the way you want it with no need to waste time on software to correct or fine tune, then the D70S is great and practical.
